The Importance of Perseverance in Music Lessons

As a guitar and keyboard teacher with over a decade of experience, I recently came across an Instagram post by David Asher Brown that resonated deeply with me. He highlighted a common scenario: parents allowing their children to quit music lessons because they don't like to practice. This sentiment struck a chord with me because it's something I've observed time and again in my own teaching journey.

Almost every child who has attempted to learn a musical instrument has complained about practicing. It’s natural; kids, and even adults, often balk at tasks that require effort and discipline. However, when parents let their kids quit, they might be robbing them of future joy and fulfillment. Think about it—how many adults regret not sticking with music lessons when they had the chance?

David Asher Brown made a compelling comparison: if parents stopped teaching their kids to read because they complained, it would be unthinkable. Music, like reading, is a valuable skill that enriches life. While children may struggle and express frustration, they need the guidance and encouragement of adults to persevere.

The brain’s plasticity makes it easier for kids to pick up new skills, but another crucial factor is the support they receive. When children feel overwhelmed and want to quit, a reassuring word from a parent can make all the difference: "Don't worry, I see that you're frustrated, but look how far you've come. Things will get easier. Chin up."

To all the parents out there, I know it's not easy. But remember, your support is crucial in helping your children thrive. And for adults considering picking up an instrument—it's never too late. Yes, it might be challenging, but the rewards are worth the effort. Look how far you’ve come in other aspects of your life. Chin up, and keep strumming those strings or pressing those keys. The journey is worth it.
