Balancing Music Practice with Festive Family Fun

As the holiday season approaches, the hustle and bustle of life and family obligations can make it challenging for musicians of all ages to maintain their regular practice routines. As a guitar and keyboard teacher, I understand the importance of finding a harmonious balance between musical pursuits and festive family activities. Here are some tips to help both children and adults keep their musical flame alive during this joyous time of year.

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Recognise that the holiday season may not be the time for elaborate practice sessions. Set realistic, achievable goals that align with your schedule. Whether it's 15 minutes of scales or a quick run-through of a favourite song, consistency is key.

  2. Incorporate Music into Celebrations: Infuse the holiday spirit into your practice sessions by playing festive tunes. Whether it's classic carols on the keyboard or acoustic renditions of holiday favourites on the guitar, make your instrument a part of the seasonal ambiance.

  3. Schedule Dedicated Practice Time: With a busy holiday schedule, it's crucial to designate specific time slots for practice. Communicate your practice schedule with family members so they can support your commitment to musical growth. Consistency is key, and having a set routine will help maintain progress.

  4. Adapt to the Situation: Embrace the unpredictability of the holiday season. If you find yourself surrounded by family and friends, consider sharing your musical talents with them. Collaborative jam sessions can be both enjoyable and a great way to stay connected with your instrument.

  5. Utilise Technology: As an online teacher, I leverage technology to my students advantage. Schedule virtual lessons or use apps and online resources for guided practice. This way, even when physically separated from my students or personal practice space, I can still engage with music.

  6. Make it a Family Affair: Encourage family members, especially children, to join in the musical fun. Whether it's playing simple rhythms, singing along, or learning a few chords, involving loved ones can turn practice into a shared experience, fostering a musical atmosphere within the family.

  7. Embrace Portable Instruments: For those on the go, consider the portability of instruments like ukuleles or compact keyboards. These smaller instruments can be more convenient during travel and family gatherings, allowing you to sneak in some practice without the bulk.

  8. Celebrate Achievements: Take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate your musical accomplishments, no matter how small. Share your progress with family and friends, and let them join in the excitement of your musical journey.

Remember, the holiday season is about joy, connection, and celebration. By weaving your musical passion into the fabric of these festivities, you can maintain your practice routine while creating lasting memories with loved ones. So, strike a chord of harmony between your musical aspirations and the holiday cheer – after all, 'tis the season for joy and music!
